Some of the disadvantages of solar energy

For the normal consumer, one of the greatest drawbacks to solar energy utilization is the cost involved in having one set up in one’s home. On the short term, it’s quite expensive and the benefits that one can gain from such a setup would require time to be felt. This means one has to have a lot of money prepared for such an undertaking.

Another is geographical location and climate. For solar power to be viable, one must be in an area that has sufficient amount of sunlight for the whole year. Cloudy or areas where storms and long winters occur would have to face the challenge of creating more efficient methods of collecting solar energy.

Instances wherein solar energy can’t be maximized

As mentioned earlier, the amount of sunlight is crucial for a solar energy system to be successful. Even if one lives in an area with sufficient sunlight, one also has to solve the problem of energy storage. Since one can’t harness solar energy at night time, having an effective energy back-up system is essential. Though lithium-ion batteries nowadays have improved energy storage capacity, one also has to consider the costs of utilizing such a battery back-up system.

One should also account for winter, cloudy days, and consecutive days of storms and rain. Speaking of storms, one other issue is when one resides in areas with strong winds. Since panels are usually elevated or installed in roofs, strong winds can damage these expensive panels easily. Whether it’s from the strong winds or debris, the panels can easily break or get detached from their installation.
